From day one, CHOP has been one of the biggest contributors to Mason's health. They not only diagnosed him with his illness, but have treated it to the point that things have been going great. We simply can't give enough credit to CHOP for their compassion and care for Mason. Whether it be an outpatient facility in Chalfont or King of Prussia, or downtown, the care for Mason is excellent. There have been a couple of different occasions that brought us out to Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, but we specifically make the trip down there for their fantastic wheelchair clinic. The one on one care and service was tremendous, and they could always adjust Mason's chair the best. Go to Home page.
The Ketogenic Diet
The Ketogenic Diet has really worked wonders for Mason. Although it did not not rid him of seizures, it has lessened them drastically and has done wonders with his immunity and overall health. It is a little easier for us to prepare because Mason is tube fed, but with will and determination it can be established with table fed kids as well. It's just a bit harder, and is a bit of a task to stay on top of because of the exact measurements and timing constraints, but will be well worth it in the end for your child. CHOP offers a class on the diet that offers everything that you need to know about it. Learn more.
Seizure Meds
Here is a list of some seizure meds with a brief description of how they affected Mason. We are not professionals when it comes to these meds, our opinion on the site is just based on how Mason did on the meds listed. |
KeppraMason had a good run with Keppra, but was taken off of it because it didn't lower the amount of seizures that he was having by much.

|
TopamaxMason has been on Topamax since day one. It has worked very well for him since a very young age. |

|
PhenobarbitalMason was on this drug at a very young age, but was taken off of it due to its side effects. |

DiastatDiastat is what Mason used to use to use to bring him out of seizures, but we found that he would become very sluggish and tired as a side effect and switched to Midazolam. |
Early Intervention
Once you are aware that your child may have special needs, Early Intervention will be available to you. This a great service to have that is available through the county that you live in. The services are available for up to age five for your child. These services include physical, occupational, vision and speech therapies. If you are interested in these services I suggest that you perform a Google search for Early Intervention in the area that you live, for there is no national or governmental web site for these services.
The Anat Baniel Method
This is a modern therapy approach that is still gaining recognition in the medical field. Simply put, the therapy creates new neural connections. This is achieved through stimulating different parts of the body through touch. Mason has had this therapy in the past, and we do believe that we have seen results. However, given that this form of treatment is considered unorthodox, it is not covered by insurance. Although this is the case, I feel that if you were to see drastic results, then it would be well worth it. More info.
